“Somewhere and not Anywhere” is an exploration of the twenty-first century American landscape. It is a study of the places, the people, and the everyday events that define who we are, or alternatively, are a product of who we are as Americans. The smooth windowless facades of shopping malls, the cluttered interiors of VFW posts, the flags waving under a halcyon blue sky, the legions of fans at a Nascar race, the Burger King drive-thru that backs up to an Alaskan waterway, the old farmland that has become buried under new suburban development, a tree punctured by an electric line- all images that collectively paint a portrait of America today.

Looking at our American landscape is like hearing the national anthem sung at a sporting event- emotionally wrought and beautiful enough to give you chills, but usually sung slightly out of key. There are things about America that fascinate me and things that pain me. In all of this, there is a beauty that’s hard to describe. The photographs included in this continually-evolving project are neither an endorsement nor a criticism of America as she is today, but rather are meant to draw your attention to the places and people that pass us by.
